I would say it's a little unfair to call nuclear expensive in general today - constructing new plants, yes, but amortised, older plants produce pretty much the cheapest electricity in most markets in which they operate (and often aren't rewarded financially for being low carbon).

You mentioned wanting to read about economics of nuclear. If you're most interested in new plants, then a good place to start is the UK gov review into the financing of Hinkley Point C. You will see the huge effect that cost of financing has on the overall cost of electricity (check graphics towards end of report). If governments can stomach taking risk onto their books, nuclear can still be very good value, even in Europe and N America.
