The fossil fuel industry is indeed powerful; pumping oil is good business. The fossil fuel industry aren’t out to sell oil and gas for fun. They have a great product that everyone wants. If a nuclear energy system (incl eg synfuels) can be made cheaper than a fossil fuel one, then fossil fuels will die out because the good business will have moved to somewhere else. In fact, I’m sure BP and Chevron will be falling over themselves to invest in nuclear if that ever happens. If nuclear remains more expensive than fossil fuels, a transition will only happen if carbon is taxed around the world at a similar level.
